No. 164 Dawn of Time-Stonehenge
This was the first stop on a two week tour of Great Britain I took in 1998. I had left London about midnight and drove a couple of hours before stopping at a rest area to catch a few winks in the car. I had to rise again at 4AM in order to get to Stonehenge by sunrise. To my dismay, the gates were locked and you couldn't get near the stones. A little way past the monument, I found a small dirt road. As I traveled along it, I looked back and saw the red ball of the sun just peeking over the horizon. I stopped the car in the middle of the road. Clothes and gear went flying over the countryside as I dug my cameras out of my bags (which I hadn't had time to unpack yet). I photographed the slowly changing scene for almost two hours. When I was finished, I headed back to the main road. The gates still weren't open, but I didn't care. My trip to Great Britain was off to a "smashing" start.
