No. 215 Polar Bear Nursing #1

On a polar bear photographing excursion to northern Manitoba along the shores of Hudson Bay I came across

this female polar bear and her cub wondering about the tundra. I stayed with them for an hour or two

hoping for something exciting to happen. Eventually, they took a nap and I went in search of other subjects.

Later that afternoon, I returned to where I had left them and waited. Eventually, the mother bear

ambled over to a small ridge and began digging a "nest". From experience, I knew that this was preliminary

to nursing and was hoping the cub would in fact nurse before the light got too low to shoot. The

bears soon settled down and the young cub enjoyed a nice long drink.
