No.146 White-tail Jump
For the last few years, I have made an annual pilgrimage to Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. My main objective on this trek is to photograph the magnificent population of white-tailed deer that resides there. Many of these deer, seeing over 10 million people a year go through the park, are relatively unafraid of humans. This makes them great photographic subjects. I had been following this particular buck at relatively close quarters since sunrise, photographing him as he meandered across a dew covered meadow. After a while, I noticed we were coming to a fence. I knew the buck would either have to go through it or over it. I hurried on ahead and set up near the spot I thought he might cross. Luck being with me that day, the deer crossed the fence right where I wanted him to. I caught him in mid-air as he cleared the wire and headed for the woods on the other side.
